Blackfoot Daisy (Melampodium leucanthum) Extract
 

Researched Medicinal Properties

  • Anticancer – Compounds isolated from M. leucanthum, such as meleucanthin and other germacranolide sesquiterpene lactones, have demonstrated cytotoxic efficacy against various cancer cell lines, including PC-3 and DU 145 prostate cancer cells, HeLa cervical cancer cells, and HCC1806 triple-negative breast cancer cells. These compounds exhibited antiproliferative activities by inducing cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase and disrupting mitotic spindle formation. 

  • Traditional Uses – Historically, M. leucanthum has been utilized in folk medicine for various ailments, although specific applications are not well-documented in contemporary scientific literature. 

 

⚠️ Toxicity Information

Melampodium leucanthum is considered non-toxic to humans and animals. Major poison control centers and health organizations do not list it as toxic, making it a safe choice for gardens and homes. However, minor skin irritations can occur if you have sensitive skin; it's advisable to wash hands after handling the plant.

 

This extract is derived from the aerial parts of Melampodium leucanthum, commonly known as Blackfoot Daisy or Plains Blackfoot, collected in Antonio, TX. Extraction was performed using 90% ethanol, followed by filtration through a 0.22 µm filter to ensure purity.
